I support those that are experiencing a convergence of Elder Wisdom and Armchair Activism to become modern day change agents.
Elder Wisdom is the term that I use to identify the culmination of experiences that a person in their late 50’s and beyond have amassed. Many times, this wisdom can be repurposed to transform the world into a better place, yet the Elder has no idea how that might transpire, or what they might do to support that.
I use Armchair Activism to represent those people who have typically led a “normal” life. They have done things like gone to school for advanced degrees, worked, raised children, enjoyed nature, dabbled in the arts, traveled, been involved at their church / school, and well, just led an ordinary life. They are at the stage where they are having thoughts of retirement, slowing down and maybe some travel. Suddenly, and usually, it is suddenly rather than gradually, they are feeling stirred to “get out there and do something.” They may have a clear idea of the “what” is to be done, and they may not.
The work that we focus on (the client and I) is to slow down, tune in and see what it is that is emerging. Where is the clarion call coming from? Is it time to take action? What might that look like? The key to the purpose work is really to establish and maintain the connection to a Trusted Source, have parts come into alignment with purpose, and for the self to determine the best strategy for moving forward. Is it to serve the Guiding Voice without question? Is it to move into partnership? Something else? All too often, we have lived a life of hurry up, drive to the finish line and seldom taken a breath in between. The work is centered around deep listening to the Inner Wisdom and allowing.
I use the metaphor of The Emerging Elephant. Two primary concepts – first an elephant is not made in a day; baby elephants take time – 18 to 21 months, or nearly 2 years. Responding to a calling may take time. The second concept is the tried and true – is anyone going to talk about the elephant in the room? All the reasons why we can’t; the emotional baggage that holds us back; the ideas that may sound crazy to everyone we know. These are the things that we hold space for, and honor in the emergence process.
As we move through the process, the individual will need to move more directly into communion with their calling or, even a business in an actionable way. This is the time that we tap into the consciousness of the entity (calling, business or both) and create a partnership with it to move forward in the world.
